1886: Hungarian composer and pianist Franz Liszt died on July 31st at the age of 75. His piano compositions include works such as his Piano Sonata in B minor, and two piano concertos, which have entered the standard repertoire. He also made many exuberant piano transcriptions of operas, famous symphonies, Paganini Caprices, and Schubert Lieder. Liszt studied and played at Vienna and Paris and for most of his early adulthood toured throughout Europe giving concerts. His music is well loved in part because of its melodic and emotional harmonies.

1910：American painter Winslow Homer died on July 31st at the age of 74. Homer was born in Boston, where he later worked as a lithographer and illustrator. In 1861 he was sent to the Civil War battlefront as correspondent for Harper's Weekly, his work winning international acclaim. Many of his studies of everyday life, such as Snap the Whip, date from the postwar period, during which he was a popular magazine illustrator. In 1876, Homer abandoned illustration to devote himself to painting. He found his inspiration in the American scene. His most famous painting may be The Gulf Stream (1899), which shows a black man in a battered boat, who has survived a storm. After 1884 he lived the life of a recluse.
