Today's Highlight in History:

1869:Indian spiritual and political leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2nd.Gandhi led the struggle for India's independence from the British Empire, empowered by tens of millions. Throughout his life, he rejected any form of terrorism or violence. His philosophy of nonviolence, for which he coined the term satyagraha, has influenced national and international nonviolent resistance movements to this day.

1950: The comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz is first published in seven US newspapers on October 2nd. Charlie Brown, his dog Snoopy, and their friends reflected both childhood pleasures and adult anxieties for the next fifty years. By 1969 the comic strip appeared in one thousand newspapers in the United States and Canada and more than one hundred worldwide.

1990:A Chinese airline Boeing 737-247 is hijacked on October 2nd; after landing at Guangzhou for lack of oil, it crashes into two airliners on the ground, killing 132.
