Introduction: Alan and Ken have been good friends and neighbors in their small town for 40 years. T heir lives are very similar. T hey work in the same office. They help each other with chores like shoveling their snow-covered driveways. Each of their wives keeps an eye on her husband’s health, too. Although they both felt fine, today Alan and Ken each went to the doctor for a checkup because their wives suggested it was time. T hey were each surprised to find out about a new medical problem. N ow, they each want more information about their health, and that’s where their stories start being different. Alan doesn’t know where to start; Ken knows exactly where to look.
The doctor surprised Alan with the news that he has high blood pressure and took a few minutes to explain the problem. When she asked if he had any questions, Alan said no. So, the doctor gave him a prescription for medicine to lower his high blood pressure, and Alan left. By the time he got home, however, Alan realized there were other things he wanted to know about his condition, but he didn’t know where to look. And, he thought, I feel fine—why bother to take another pill?
Ken also didn’t expect to be told he has high blood pressure. Just like Alan, at first the doctor’s explanation was enough for Ken. He took his prescription for medicine and headed home. But on his way home, Ken, too, thought of more questions. So, he went to the bookcase in the living room and took out a book his wife just got from the National Institute on Aging. Sure enough, in Bound for Your Good Health: A Collection of Age Pages, Ken found a section explaining high blood pressure. It even had places to contact for more information. Ken was able to get answers to his questions. He learned how important it is to take his medicine just like the doctor ordered.
